One Step Closer to a Healthier Community

The Shimoga Multipurpose Social Service Society, Shivamogga, successfully organized Health Check-up and awareness camp on 19 August 2026 at **Sri Sadguru Siddharudha Math, Kittadahalli** in collaboration with MIO Speciality Cancer Hospital Thirthahalli and District Health and Family Welfare Department.

The camp was conducted to promote awareness about preventive healthcare, identifying common health problems at an early stage and providing basic medical examinations and guidance to women, and other members of the local community.

The health camp brought together medical professionals, social service organizations, local leaders, Self-Help Group representatives, Gram Panchayat staff, activists, and members of the community. The programme provided an important opportunity for people, especially women, to receive health information, undergo basic medical examinations, discuss their health concerns, and receive guidance regarding further treatment and preventive care.

The main objectives of health check-up camp were:

* To create awareness about the importance of regular health check-ups and early diagnosis of diseases.

* To provide basic health examinations to SHG members and the local community.

* To create awareness regarding HIV, tuberculosis, cancer, diabetes, high blood pressure, dental health, and other common health concerns.

* To educate women and girls about menstrual hygiene and reproductive and personal health.

* To identify symptoms and health problems that may require further medical attention.

* To increase awareness about the early symptoms of cancer among women and the importance of timely consultation and treatment.

* To encourage people to adopt preventive healthcare practices and seek medical assistance without delay.

Health Awareness and Medical Services

During the camp, Dr. D. Suresh Rao, Medical Officer from MIO Hospital, explained the importance of maintaining good health, undergoing regular medical examinations, and identifying diseases at an early stage. HE briefed on HIV and the importance of awareness, prevention, and timely testing. Participants were also informed about the role of blood tests in identifying various health conditions and the importance of seeking medical advice based on test results.

The camp also focused on common lifestyle-related health problems such as diabetes and high blood pressure. Participants were educated about the importance of regular monitoring, healthy food habits, physical activity, and timely medical consultation. Awareness was created about the fact that some health conditions may not show serious symptoms during their early stages, making regular health check-ups particularly important.

Attention was also given to dental health and participants were made aware of the importance of maintaining proper oral hygiene and seeking treatment for dental problems at an early stage. Information regarding tuberculosis was also provided. Participants were educated about the importance of recognizing symptoms, obtaining medical examination when necessary and completing the prescribed treatment under medical supervision.

Women's Health and Reproductive Health Awareness

A major focus of the camp was on women's personal and reproductive health. Many women and girls may hesitate to discuss personal health concerns openly because of embarrassment, lack of awareness, or social stigma. Therefore, the camp created an opportunity for participants to receive information and medical guidance in a supportive environment. Dr. D. Suresh Rao provided information regarding menstrual and reproductive health concerns, including abnormal white or red discharge, menstrual-related problems, lower abdominal pain, burning sensation during urination, and other concerns related to the genital and reproductive areas.

Participants were encouraged not to ignore persistent or unusual symptoms and to seek timely medical consultation. The importance of personal hygiene, menstrual hygiene, and early examination of health problems was emphasized. The awareness session helped participants better understand that many health problems can be managed more effectively when identified and treated at an early stage.

Cancer Awareness

Dr. Raghavendra, Medical Officer from Kittadahalli Primary Health Centre was also present at the camp and provided important information regarding cancer awareness among women. He explained the importance of recognizing possible warning signs and symptoms at an early stage and taking appropriate precautions. The participants were encouraged to pay attention to changes in their health and not to delay seeking medical advice when unusual symptoms persist.

The awareness programme emphasized that early detection and timely consultation are important in improving health outcomes. Women were encouraged to overcome fear and hesitation and to discuss health concerns with qualified healthcare professionals. The session also highlighted the importance of regular health awareness, preventive care and following medical advice whenever further examination or treatment is required.

The successful organization of the camp was made possible through the cooperation and active participation of SHG members and the local community. Participation and support of Mrs. Pushpa, President of the Kittadahalli Stree Bandhu Federation and Mrs. Vanitha, Secretary of the Federation Their participation and support played an important role in mobilizing members and encouraging women and community members to benefit from the health services provided during the camp.

The health check-up camp received a good response from the community. A total of 178 members of the Stree Bandhu Federation and the local community benefited from the camp. The beneficiaries received valuable health information, awareness about important diseases and health conditions, and opportunities for medical examination and consultation. The camp was particularly beneficial in creating awareness about women's health issues that are often neglected or left untreated because of a lack of information or hesitation in seeking medical assistance. The programme also encouraged community members to take greater responsibility for their health and to recognize the importance of preventive healthcare and early medical consultation.

Village leaders Mr. Lokan Gowda and Mr. Suresh were also present and extended their support to the programme. The staff members of the Kittadahalli Gram Panchayat contributed to the successful coordination of the camp.

Mr. Shanmukha, Coordinator of the SMSSS organization was present and supported the implementation and coordination of the programme. SMSSS Animator Jayasheela also participated in the camp and contributed to the community outreach and awareness activities.

The cooperation between healthcare institutions, government health departments, social service organizations, Self-Help Groups, local leaders, and the Gram Panchayat demonstrated the importance of collective efforts in promoting community health and well-being.
