SHIVAMOGGA: In a heartwarming initiative aimed at fostering independence and self-confidence, the Shimoga Multipurpose Social Service Society (SMSSS) - 'Chaitanya' organized a wheelchair distribution program titled "A Ray of Hope for the Specially-Abled" at its Alkola premises on Thursday 09 April, 2026.

Promoting Dignity and Independence

Speaking at the event, Fr. Pius D’Souza, Director of SMSSS, emphasized that the primary goal of providing wheelchairs is to ensure that the specially-abled can carry out their daily activities without being dependent on others.

"We want to inspire them to develop a positive mindset and build a life rooted in self-assurance," Fr. D’Souza stated. He drew a moving parallel to the spirit of the Paralympics, noting, "True humanity is seen when a competitor falls, and others turn back to help them move forward together. Success is not just about winning alone; it is about winning alongside everyone."

A Legacy of Service

For over 37 years, SMSSS has been a pillar of social service across the districts of Shivamogga, Davanagere, and Chitradurga. The organization has consistently worked for the upliftment of:

• The poor and marginalized.

• Women and children.

• Small and marginal farmers.

• Youth

• Cancer patients and

* Farmers

The Director expressed deep gratitude to Mrs Nelly Picardo from Bengaluru and other generous donors whose contributions made this distribution possible.

• Support for 30 Individuals: A total of 30 specially-abled beneficiaries received high-quality wheelchairs during the ceremony.

• Technical Guidance: Mr Kiran, from the Disability Department of the Association of People (Bengaluru), provided a detailed demonstration on wheelchair assembly, maintenance of spare parts, and the effective use of various assistive devices.

By bridging the gap between physical limitation and accessibility, 'Chaitanya' continues to prove that with the right support, every individual has the potential to move forward with pride.
