Babanna
Turning Training into Triumph: Babanna’s Story of Growth, Inspired by SMSSS In the quiet village of Marigudda, located within the Hosanagara Taluk, a transformation began in 2013 that would change the trajectory of one family’s future. It started when animators from the Shimoga Multipurpose Social Service Society (SMSSS) visited the community to introduce the concept of Farmer’s Self-Help Groups (FSHG). Motivated by the prospect of collective growth, Babanna and eleven other villagers united to form the Mallikarjuna FSHG, a group dedicated to securing socio-economic benefits through mutual support and shared responsibility.
The true turning point for Babanna came through the consistent training and mentorship provided by the SMSSS. Among the various sessions offered, a specialized program on the benefits of cow rearing resonated deeply with him. This educational spark provided Babanna with the confidence and technical knowledge needed to venture into dairy farming, turning a theoretical concept into a practical plan for financial independence.
With the backing of his self-help group, Babanna secured a loan from the Farmers federation to purchase his first two cows. His dedication to the craft quickly yielded impressive results; he began producing enough milk to sell 23 liters per day, generating a consistent net profit of ₹12,000 per month. By recognizing the value of every resource, he also turned the sale of manure into a secondary source of income, ensuring his small enterprise was both efficient and sustainable.
Today, Babanna’s success has come full circle. The profits from his initial venture have allowed him to expand his herd by purchasing two additional cows, further strengthening his family's financial security. What began as a community meeting has blossomed into a life of self-sufficiency. Babanna and his family remain deeply grateful to SMSSS for the enlightenment and support that empowered them to enhance their standard of living and build a prosperous future.
